Vanilla (V. Schwarz), Pflanzengattung aus der Familie der Orchideae-Arethuseae-Vanilleae, 20. Kl. 1. Ordn. L.; Arten: V. aromatica, Strauch in Südamerika, an Bäumen schmarotzend hinauf kletternd, mit eirundlänglichen nervigen Blättern, weiß- u. grünlichgelben, auch angeblich schwärzlichen Blüthen, s. Vanille; V. planifolia Andr., von ihr leiten Einige die Vanille de ley ab; sie ist auch in europäischen Gewächshäusern zur Erzeugung reifer Früchte gebracht worden, welche der feinsten mexicanischen V. nicht nachstanden. Von den reisen Früchten träufelt ein sehr gewürzhafter Balsam. V. odorata Prst. u. V. pompona, beide in Südamerika, liefern ebenfalls gewürzhafte Früchte; die der letztern sind fleischig, schwer zu trocknen u. zu transportiren.
