Vice

Vice (lat.), an Jemands Stelle; Vices, Stellvertretung; in gerichtlichen Schriften od. Bekanntmachungen unterschreibt ein Unterbeamter in vicibus N. N., d.h. an der Stelle des N. N., des Oberbeamten. Daher Vice.... als Vorsetzsylbe bei Amtsnamen, welches eigentlich den Stellvertreter der Beamten anzeigt, oft aber nur als Titel beigegeben wird, z.B. Viceconsul, Vicekanzler, Vicepräsident, Vicedirector etc., der bei der Abwesenheit des Consuls, Kanzlers, Präsidenten, Directors etc. dessen Stelle vertritt. Viceadmiral ist der Commandant der zweiten Flotte.
