Warton (spr. Uart'n), 1) Joseph, geb. 1722; war seit 1766 Rector am Collegium in Winchester, 1783 Pfarrer in Upham, später in Wickham u. st. 1800; er schr. Odes on several subjects, Lond. 1746; Essay on the genius and writings of Pope, ebd. 1772, 2 Thle., ebd. 1782; übersetzte die Eklogen u. die Georgica Virgils u. gab Popes sämmtliche Werke, ebd. 1797, 9 Thle., heraus. 2) Thomas, Bruder des Vor., geb. 1728; studirte in Oxford, wurde 1757 Professor der Dichtkunst daselbst, später Professor der Geschichte u. st. 21. Mai 1790; er schr. Pleasure of melancholy, 1747; Oden, Lieder u. Sonetten, Lond. 1771, n. A. ebd. 1791; Commentar über Milton; History of the English poetry from the close of the eleventh to the commencement of the eighteenth century, ebd, 1774, 3 Bde., beste Ausgabe von Price, ebd. 1824, 3 Bde., n.
