Mount (spr. Maunt), William S., geb. 1807 zu Setanket im Staate New York, erlernte Anfangs die Firmaschreiberei u. Decorationsmalerei, besuchte 1826 die Malerakademie zu New York, beschäftigte sich Anfangs mit Historienmalerei, u. sein erstes Gemälde in diesem Genre war Christ raising the daughter of Jairus, welchem Saul and the witch of Endor u. 1830 Rustic dance (ein komisches Gemälde) folgte. Er ist in der Auffassung komischer Gegenstände u. in der Darstellung von Negern u. Scenen aus dem Negerleben groß; zu den bekanntesten seiner Gemälde in diesem Genre gehören: Men husking Corn; Walking the Crack; The sportsman's last visit; The raffle; The courtship; Nooning; Bargaining a horse; [491] Power of music; Music is contagious; Just in time; California News; The Lucky Thron, u. v. a.
