Maldonatus

Maldonatus (Maldonato), Johann, geb. 1534 in Las Casas de la Reina in Estremadura (Spanien), studirte erst in Salamanca Philologie u. Rechtswissenschaften, dann Theologie, trat 1592 zu Rom in den Jesuitenorden u. wurde 1563 Professor der Theologie an der Sorbonne in Paris, wo er Anfangs ein sehr gefeierter Lehrer war, später aber wegen seines Zweifels an der unbefleckten Empfängniß der Maria viel Widerspruch fand; er legte deshalb seine Stelle nieder u. ging in das Jesuitencollegium in Bourges; zuletzt folgte er einem Rufe des Papstes Gregor XIII. zur Mitwirkung an der neuen Ausgabe der Septuaginta nach Rom u. st. hier 3. Jan.1583. Er sehr dogmatische Abhandlung (über Gnade, Erbsünde, die Sacramente etc., Lyon 1614), bes. aber Commentare über alttestamentliche Schriften, 1609, 1634 u. über die vier Evangelien, zuerst herausgegeben 1596 u. ö., u. Ausgabe von Sausen, Mainz 1840, 5 Bde.
