Birkat (Birket), arabischer See; daher B. ad-Oenara, Seen im Natrumthal in Unterägypten, ist auf der einen Seite mit Binsen umwachsen, woraus die Eingeborenen Matten machen; das Natrum aus diesem See holt gegen Erlaubniß die Stadt Terraneh; B. el Ballah, auf der Landenge Suez; B. el Hadschi (Pilgersee), in Unterägypten, nimmt den Kanal von Heliopolis auf u. ist vielleicht Überbleibsel eines versandeten Nilarmes; in der dabei befindlichen Ebene sammelt sich jährlich die Karavane nach Mekka, gewöhnlich 50,000 M.; B. el Kerun, See in Mittelägypten, der Mörissee (s.d.) des Alterthums; B. Mariut, See in Mittelägypten, sonst Mareotis (s.d.); B. Lut, so v.w. Todtes Meer.
