Demarcation

Demarcation (v. fr.), Abgrenzung; daher Demarcationslinie, 1) Linie, welche zwei im Waffenstillstand od. im Frieden in der Besetzung eines Gebietes eines Dritten begriffene Armeen vermöge Verträge von einander trennt. Meist folgt sie, so weit als möglich, natürlichen Terraingegenständen, Flüssen, Bächen, Wegen etc. Beispiele: die D., welche im 15. Jahrh. Papst Alexander VI. in dem Streite Spaniens u. Portugals durch den Ocean[828] zog; die D. nach dem Frieden von Basel 1795 zwischen der französischen u. preußisch-hessischen Armee, 1813 zwischen der französischen u. preußisch-russischen in Schlesien; 2) so v.w. Grenzlinie, bes. wenn sie vorher streitige Grenzen bestimmt, od. gezogen wird, um das Sprachgebiet zweier unter einem Oberhauptverbundener Nationalitäten abzugrenzen, so die Linie, welche 1848 in Posen zur Trennung des polnischen u. deutschen Sprachgebietes abgesteckt werden sollte, ferner die Linie, welche 1849 zu einem ähnlichen in Schleswig projectirt wurde.
