Distant

Distant (v. lat.), entfernt, abstehend; daher Distanz (lat. Distantia, fr. Distance, spr. Distangs), 1) Entfernung, Abstand zweier Dinge; wird durch die zwischen beiden denkbare gerade Linie bestimmt; 2) der Abstand der Geschütze von einander; 3) der Abstand der Glieder, Züge od. Bataillons hinter einander; dagegen Intervallen, die Zwischenräume der neben einander stehenden Bataillone, Züge etc.; 4) in der Geodäsie die Länge einer geraden Linie, die von einem Punkte zu einem andern führt; s. Distanzmessung; 5) in der Astronomie unterscheidet man die Linear-D., die wirkliche Entfernung zweier Weltkörper von einander, u. die Winkel-D., die scheinbare Entfernung derselben von einander, welche, den gleichweiten Abstand beider vom Auge angenommen, durch den Winkel bestimmt wird, welcher sich von beiden Sternen aus mit dem Auge bildet.
