Leviathan, 1) in der Bibel wahrscheinlich das Krokodil, nach And. die vorweltliche Rieseneidechse (Megalosaurus); 2) (spr. Liveiaßhan, Great Eastern, spr. Gret Ihst'rn), ein Riesendampfschiff, welches 1856–58, auf der Themse, unterhalb London, Deptford gegenüber, nach einem neuen Systeme gebaut u. nach vielfachen vergeblichen Versuchen, es vom Stapel zu lassen, endlich im Sommer 1859 flott gemacht wurde. Es hat 27,000 Tonnen Gehalt, 962 Fuß Länge, 83 Fuß Breite, 3000 Pferdekraft Dampfmaschinen (als Bewegungmittel dienen ihm Schaufelräder, Schrauben u. Segel), kann über 4000 Passagiere aufnehmen u. ist vorläufig für die Postlinie England-Amerika bestimmt; es für die Linie Australien zu verwenden, wozu es ursprünglich bestimmt war, ist aufgegeben worden. Der L. ist das größte Fahrzeug der Welt.
