Quincy (spr. Kwinßi), 1) Josiah, geb. 1772, studirte die Rechtswissenschaften; wurde 1804 von Boston als Repräsentant in den Congreß geschickt, wo er seinen Sitz 8 Jahre einnahm, war 1814–19 Senator im Congreß für Suffolk, 1820 wieder Repräsentant von Boston u. Sprecher des Hauses, 1821 Stadtrichter u. 1823–1828 Bürgermeister von Boston; 1829 wurde er Präsident der Harvard-Universität, resignirte aber 1845 u. privatisirt seitdem in Boston; er schr.: Speeches in Congress and orations on various occasions; Life of Josiah Quincy (seines Vaters), Boston 1825; Centennial address on the two hundredth anniversary of the settlement of Boston, Bost. 1830; A history of Harvard University from 1636 to 1836, Cambridge 1842, 2 Bde.; Memoir of James Graham, Bost. 1846; Memoir of Major Samuel Shaw, Bost. 1847; A municipal history of town and city of Boston from 1630 to 1830, Bost. 1852; 2) Josiah, geb. 1802 in Boston; studirte die Rechtswissenschaft; war Präsident des Senates von Massachusetts, Vorsitzender des Gemeinderaths u. von 1845–48 Bürgermeister von Boston; ihm verdankt die Stadt die Vollendung der westlichen Eisenbahn von Massachusetts, des Cochituale Aquäducts u. der Eisenbahnkette, welche die Gewässer der westlichen Binnenseen zu Ogdensburg u. des St. Lorenzstromes zu Montreal mit dem Atlantischen Ocean zu Boston verbindet. 3) Q.
