Reading (spr. Rihding), 1) städtischer Bezirk mit Postamt (Post-township) in der Grafschaft Middlesex des Staates Massachusetts (Nordamerika), an der Boston-Maine Eisenbahn; Industrie, namentlich bedeutende Schuhmacherei; 4000 Ew.; 2) Hauptstadt der Grafschaft Berks im Staate Pennsylvanien, am Schuylkill River, an der Philadelphia-Reading-Pottsville Eisenbahn u. am Zusammenfluß des Schuylkillkanals mit dem Unionkanal; 20 Kirchen, 2 Banken, mehre öffentliche Bibliotheken; Industrie in Hüten, Schuhen, Eisenwaaren (bes. Nägeln), Dampfmaschinen. R. wurde 1748 von Thomas u. Richard Penn angelegt, 1783 als Borough u. 1847 als City incorporirt; 1853 über 17,000 Ew.
