Sepulvĕda, 1) Juan Ginez, geb. um 1490 in Pozo Blanco bei Cordova; studirte in Cordova, Alcala de Henarez u. Bologna Philologie u. lebte dann in Rom; 1536 kehrte er als Hofhistoriograph Karls V. nach Spanien zurück, wo er mit historischen u. humanistischen Arbeiten beschäftigt war. Nach Karls V. Abdankung zog er nach Valladolid, später nach Cordova u.st. 23. Nov. 1574. Er breitete die Klassische Literatur in Spanien aus u. widerstrebte las Casas' Antrage wegen Milderung des Schicksals der Indianer in Amerika; er schr.: De rebus Hispanorum gestis ad novum Orbem Mexicanum; De rebus gestis Philippi II.; Historia Caroli V. imperatoris (erst 1775 wieder aufgefunden u. 1780 herausgegeben); De vita et rebus gestis Aegidii Albornotii, Rom 1525, Fol.; Descriptio collegii Hispanorum Bononiensis; Democrates, ebd. 1535; Apologia pro libro de justis belli causis contra Indos suscepti, ebd. 1550; De ritu nuptiarum et dispensatione, ebd. 1531; De fato et libero arbitrio (gegen Luther), ebd. 1526; Antapologia pro Alberto Pio (gegen Erasmus), ebd. 1532; De correctione anni et mensium Rom., Vened. 1546; Epistolae, herausgeg. Par. 1581; Opera varia, ebd. 1541; Opera omnia, Köln 1602, Madrid 1780, 4 Bde. 2) Lorenzo de S., Zeitgenoß des Vor., schrieb mehre Romanzen, welche er in einer Sammlung (Antw. 1551 u.ö.) zusammenstellte.
