Tympănum

Tympănum (v. gr.), 1) eine dem Tambourin ähnliche Handtrommel, Handpauke, mit hohlem, halbrund gewölbtem Bauch; bes. brauchte man das T. bei dem Dienst der Kybele (s. Tympanismos) u. bei Einweihungen in die Mysterien; 2) so v.w. Pauke; 3) (Anat.), Paukenhöhle, s.u. Ohr B) a); 4) Rad ohne Speichen; 5) s. Schöpfrad; 6) der freie, zugemauerte, dreieckige Raum, welchen der Giebel der Tempel (s.d. S. 355) in sich schloß; 7) eine beckenförmige Vertiefung an einer Wand, durch eine Bildsäule ausgefüllt.
