Mail [1]

Mail (spr. Maij), 1) (Mailbahn), im Mittelalter eine meist mit Bretern beschlagene Bahn, auf der alle Spiele, Ballspiele, Kegelspiel mit Werfen u. dgl., gespielt wurden; darnach die Straßen Pall-Mall benannt; 2) jetzt Spiel, welches in einer von Bretern eingeschossenen Bahn (Mailbahn), welche die Gestalt eines Hufeisens hat, gespielt wird. Die Spielenden bedienen sich dabei eines hölzernen, an beiden Enden mit Eisen beschlagenen, biegsamen Kolbens, dessen oberer Theil die Form eines Löffels hat, mit welchen buchsbaumene Kugeln aufgefaßt u. nach den Regeln des Spiels durch die Bahn geschoben werden.
