Wotton, Henry, geb. 1568 zu Boughton-Hall in der Grafschaft Kent, studirte in Oxford die Rechte u. machte dann eine neunjährige Reise auf dem Continent, trat hierauf als Secretär in die Dienste des Grafen Essex, während dessen Hochverrathsprocesse er sich in Florenz aufhielt, wurde unter Jakob I. Ritter u. 1604 Gesandter in Venedig, erhielt dann verschiedene diplomatische Sendungen nach Italien, Deutschland u. Holland, wurde 1623 Vorsteher der Schule in Eton u. widmete sich seitdem fast ausschließend den Wissenschaften u. st. 1639 in Eton; er schr.: The state of Christendom; Lehrbuch der Baukunst u. m. a.; seine Poesien, Briefe u. Charakterbilder sind gesammelt als Reliquiae Wottonianae, herausgeg. Lond. 1651 u. 1685.
