Algae

Algae (Algen), erste Klasse im Endlicherschen Systeme; Ursprosser des Wassers, aus (verlängerten) Zellen gebildet, welche einzeln oder zu einem Gewebe verschmolzen sind u. in letzterem Falle der Pflanze ein faden-, zweig- oder blattartiges Ansehen geben. Sie bilden die Familien Spaltthieralgen (Datomeae), Gallertalgen (Nostochinae), Wasserfäden (Confervaceae), Armleuchter (Characeae), Grüntange (Ulvaceae), [306] Rothtange (Florideae) u. Tange (Fucaceae). Einige A. sind als Heilmittel gebraucht u. bedingen als Pflanzenschmarotzer auf dem menschlichen Körper Krankheiten od. finden sich wenigstens bei allerlei krankhaften Zuständen ein, wenn z.B. eiweißhaltige Flüssigkeiten in od. an dem Körper in Gährung übergehen. Auch bei Unreinlichkeit der Haut, in eiternden Wunden, dem Weichselzopf, den Aphthen (sog. Schwämmchen) u.s.w. nisten sie sich ein.
