Narcissus, 1) (Sagengesch.), s. Narkissos; 2) Freigelassener, Geheimschreiber u. Günstling des römischen Kaisers Claudius; er benutzte seine Stellung zu seiner Bereicherung u. zur Bedrückung Roms u. veranlaßte den Kaiser seine zweite Gemahlin Messalina hinrichten zu lassen; als Agrippina den Claudius zu vergiften beschlossen hatte, ließ sie den N. erst aus Rom entfernen u. dann, 55 n.Chr., ebenfalls umbringen. 3) St., soll einer der 70 Jünger, dann Bischof von Athen u. Märtyrer gewesen sein; Tag der 31. Oct. 4) Bischof von Jerusalem aus dem 2. Jahrh.; soll für die Kirche zu Jerusalem Wasser in Öl verwandelt haben, wurde dann Einsiedler, kehrte aber nach Jahren nach seinem Bischofssitz zurück.
