Cheke (spr. Tschihk), John, geb. 1514 in Cambridge, war Professor der griechischen Sprachedaselbst u. Erzieher Eduards, des Sohnes Heinrichs VIII., dabei. Staatssecretär. Die Königin Maria, Heinrichs VIII. Tochter, ließ Ch. in den Tower setzen, u. erst, als er wieder katholisch geworden war, wurde er freigelassen u. st. bald darauf. Er schr.: De pronunciatione graecae linguae, Basel 1555; De superstitione, Lond. 1705; übersetzte auch die Homilien des Chrysostomus, Lond. 1543 u. 1547, u. m. a. ins Lateinische.
