Compression (v. lat.), Druck, Zusammendrückung; daher Compressionsfontaine, s. u. Springbrunnen; Compressionsgefäß der Feuerspritze, s. u. Feuerspritze; Compressionsinstrument, so v. w. Compressorium; Compressionskraft, so v. w. Druckkraft; Compressionsmaschine u. Compressionspumpe, Werkzeug, um elastisch flüssige Körper in einen engeren Raum zusammenzupressen; dient bes. zur Zusammendrückung gasförmiger Flüssigkeiten, vorzüglich der atmosphärischen Luft; als solche läßt sich jede mit Hähnen versehene Luftpumpe brauchen, auch die Vorkehrung, wodurch an Windbüchsen die Flaschen gepumpt werden, gehört hierher. Anderer Art sind die Maschinen, durch die in der Experimentalphysik die Compressibilität des Wassers u.[322] ähnlicher tropfbarer Flüssigkeiten erwiesen wird, dergl. Hawksbee zuerst, dann Nollet, Winkler, Shaw, Fontana, Abich u. Zimmermann, Herbert, Parkes u. Pfaff angaben. Compressionsschwelle, s. u. Orgel.
