Edentāta

Edentāta, (Zahnlose Thiere, Wenigzähner, Fehlzähner), 7. Ordnung der Säugthiere, haben keine Vorderzähne, im Unterkiefer oft gar keine; bei manchen fehlen auch die Eckzähne u. die immer sehr einfachgebildeten Backenzähne; die Zehen sind meist verwachsen u. haben große, starke, mehr od. weniger krumme Krallen, welche mehrere in der Ruhe nach innen umschlagen können, u. welche zum Klettern, Graben u. zur Vertheidigung dienen; getheilt in Faulthiere (Tardigrada, Gattungen: Faulthiere, Großthier), Eigentliche Zahnlose od. Wurmzüngler (Vermilingnia), (Gattungen: Gürtelthier, Ameisenscharrer, Ameisenfresser, Schuppenthier) u. Monotremen (Gattungen: Ameisenigel od. Echidna u. Schnabelthier); letztere Abtheilung wird jetzt von mehreren Naturforschern zu den Beutelthieren gezählt.
