Nuytsland

Nuytsland (spr. Neutsland), der frühere Name eines Küstenstrichs im Süden von Australien zwischen Flinders- u. Leeuwinsland od. den Vorgebirgen von Ostnuyts (Les Adieux) u. Westnuyts; unfruchtbar, sandig, schlecht bewässert, im Hintergrunde stark bewässert; tiefer größere Fruchtbarkeit, doch mangeln die Nahrung gebenden Pflanzen gänzlich. N. gehört zur jetzigen Colonie Westaustralien. Die wenigen Einwohner sind scheu u. ungebildet. Merkwürdige Punkte: Cap Hilliers, König Georgs III. Sund, mit dem Berge Mount Gardner, mehren Häfen u. Inseln u. dem Vorgebirge Bald-Head, Archipelagus de la Recherche (mehr als 40 Inseln, darunter Mordrain), Doubtfulls Islands u.a. N. ist 1627 entdeckt u. 250 Meilen weit befahren worden, darauf 1791 von Vancouver, 1792 von d'Entrecasteaux, 1802 von Flinders, 1803 von Baudin befahren.
