Ephraim (hebr., d.i. der Fruchtbare), zweiter Sohn Josephs u. der Asnath, wurde von Jakob als eigner Sohn betrachtet, bekam von diesem den vorzüglichsten Segen u. bildete einen eignen Stamm (Stamm E.). Seine Söhne unternahmen noch bei des Vaters Lebzeiten von Ägypten aus einen [793] Einfall in Palästina, wurden aber geschlagen; beim Auszugewar der Stamm E. 40,500 streitbare Männer stark u. erhielt bei der Vertheilung Palästinas einen Strich zwischen Manasse, Dan u. Benjamin. Sein Haß u. seine Eifersucht gegen den Stamm Juda bewirkte namentlich nach Salomos Tode die Trennung des Reichs, u. E. war Hauptsitz der israelitischen Könige. E. wurde von Salmanasser weggeführt u. soll nach Ein. später zurückgekehrt, nach And. in Asien zerstreut worden sein.
