Gossypĭum

Gossypĭum (G. L.), 1) Pflanzengattung aus der Familie der Malvaceae-Hibisceae, Monadelphie, Polyandrie L.; Arten: G. arboreum, G. album (herbaceum), G. barbadense, G. religiosum chinense s. Nanking u.a.m., s. Baumwolle; die Wurzel von G. album (Gossypii radix) soll specifisch auf das Uterinsystem wirken, bei Amenorrhöe, bei schweren Geburten mit Erfolg benutzt werden können, in größerer Gabe Abortus bewirken u. in letzter Hinsicht von den Sklaven in Südamerika gemißbraucht werden; 2) Bombax Gossypium, s.u. Baumwolle u. Bombax.
