Mann (spr. Männ), Horace, geb. 4. Mai 1796 in Franklin im Staate Massachusetts, widmete sich den Rechtswissenschaften u. wnrde bald darauf Lehrer der Lateinischen u. Griechischen Sprache an der Universität in Providence in Rhode Island; 1821 besuchte er die Juristenschule in Litchfield in Connecticut u. wurde 1823 Advocat in Norfolk. Er hielt es mit den Nationalrepublikanern od. der damaligen Whigpartei u. kämpfte für Volkserziehung u. sociale u. ökonomische Zwecke zum allgemeinen Besten; er wurde Mitglied des Repräsentantenhauses von Massachusetts u. der Gründer der Irrenanstalt zu Worcester. 1833 wurde er in den Senat u. 1836 zum Sprecher in demselben erwählt, zog sich aber 1837 von dem politischen Leben zurück u. wurde zum Secretär der Erziehungscommission in Massachusetts ernannt; in seiner zwölfjährigen Wirksamkeit in dieser Stellung erwarb er sich große Verdienste um die Volkserziehung u. Volksbildung der Vereinigten Staaten u. schrieb während dieser Zeit zwölf Annual Reporters. 1843 besuchte er Europa, um die dasigen Schulen kennen zu lernen.1848, nach dem Tode John Quincy Adams, wurde er an dessen Stelle inden Congreß gesandt, aber 1852 zum Präsidenten an dem Antiochcollege zu Yellow Springs in Ohio ernannt.
