Indianapŏlis, Hauptstadt des Staates Indiana u. Gerichtssitz der Grafschaft Marion am westlichen Arm des White River. Staatenhaus (1834 nach dem Muster des Parthenon gebaut); Gouverneurspalast, Freimaurerloge, Taubsiummenanstalt, Blindeninstitut, Irrenhaus, Kirchen, 2 Banken, 7 Zeitungen; Eisenschmelzereien. I. ist der Mittelpunkt von 7 großen Eisenbahnen, die sich strahlenförmig im ganzen Staate nach allen Richtungen hin verbreiten; 12,000 Ew. I. ist seit 1825 Hauptstadt.
