Khokand

Khokand (Khokan), 1) Khanat in Asien, erstreckt sich im Südosten des Aral-Sees zu beiden Seiten des oberen u. mittleren Sir Darja bis in die Nähe der kleinen u. mittleren Kirgisenhorde u. ist südwärts von dem westlichen Theile des Thian-Schau begrenzt; gebirgig im Osten durch den Kara-, Ala- u. Ming-Boulak-Tag, im Süden von den westlichen Ausläufern des Thian-Schau; reichbewässert durch den Sir Darja u. dessen Nebenflüsse, den Naryn, Karagol, Asserah, Talach, Ariß u.a., ist das Land meist fruchtbar u. etwa von 11/2 Mill. Einw. bewohnt. Die Einw., welche strenge Sunniten sind u. meist türkisch reden, sind Usbeken u. Bokharen, doch auch Turkmanen, Kirgisen u. Juden. Der südliche Theil des Landes heißt Ferghana, ein Name, den früher das ganze K. führte. Das Klima ist gesund, obwohl der Winter streng, der Sommer sehr heiß ist; Producte: Obst, Südfrüchte, Baumwolle u. Maulbeerbäume; die Seidenwürmer- u. Viehzucht ist bedeutend. Die Münzen sind: 1 Tilla (1 1/3 Ducaten) aus Gold, 1 Tanga aus Silber (22 Tanga = 1 Tilla) u. Karapul aus Kupfer, wovon 24 = 1 Tanga. 2) Hauptstadt K., Sitz des Khans, nahe am oberen Sir Darja u. zwischen zwei Nebenflüssen desselben, mit festem Schlosse, 300 Moscheen, 100 Medresses, 3 großen Bazars, viel Gewerbfleiß u. bedeutendem Handel; 60,000 Ew.
