Protector (lat.), 1) unter den römischen Kaisern Aufseher, z.B. Protectores cursus publici, Aufseher über öffentliche Posten; 2) Trabant; so P. domestici, seit Gordianus kaiserliche Leibgarde zu Fuß u. zu Pferd; zu ihnen gehörten die Palatini u. Praetoriani; P. ducenarii, Anführer derselben; P. limĭtum, Soldaten, in den Grenzfestungen; jetzt 3) Schutzherr, Schirmherr, Beschützer, Gönner, Mäcen; daher Protectorat, Amt od. Würde eines P. Protectorium, ausgestellter Schutzbrief eines Protectors; 4) ein Landesfürst, welcher zugleich Freimaurer ist u. sich zum Schützer des Maurerthums in seinem Lande erklärt; 5) Titel Cromwells (s.d.); 6) P. des Rheinbundes, Titel Napoleons als Beschützer des Rheinbundes, s.d.
