Than (spr. dhänn), 1) (angels. Thegn), zur Zeit der angelsächsischen Herrschaft in England die das Gefolge eines Fürsten bildenden Vasallen, welchen später, nachdem die Fürsten die Vergebung der ehedem durch Volkswahl bestimmte Ertheilung der Ämter erlangt hatten, die verschiedensten Ämter, wie die eines Ealdorman, Herzogs, Grafen, Richters, Bischofs etc. übertragen wurden. Ein besonderer Rang war Anfangs mit der Bezeichnung Th. nicht verbunden, erst nach der Eroberung durch die Normannen werden die Th-e des Königs gleichbedeutend mit den Baronen, während die niederen Th-e die Stellung der Landedelleute (Landed gentry) einnahmen; seit Heinrich II. werden die Th-e in England nur noch selten erwähnt; 2) in Schottland bis gegen Ende des 15. Jahrh. ein höherer Adelstitel ungefähr dem englischen Earl entsprechend u. seitdem auch durch diesen verdrängt.
