Moivre

Moivre (spr. Moawer), Abraham, geb. 1667 zu Vitri in der Champagne, studirte Philosophie u. Mathematik. Als Protestant ging er 1685, nach Aufhebung des Edictes von Nantes, nach England u. st. 1754 in London. Hauptsächlich beschäftigte er sich mit der Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung u. deren Anwendung. Er fand den nach ihm benannten Moivreschen Lehrsatz (s. Cotesischer Lehrsatz) u. schr.: The doctrine of chances, Lond. 1716; Miscella nea analytica de seriebus et quadraturis, ebd. 1730; Annuities of lives, ebd. 1724; seine Biographie schrieb Maty.
