Wilkins, 1) Sir Charles, geb. 1750 in Somersetshire, trat 1770 in Bengalen in Civildienste der Ostindischen Compagnie. Er studirte, unter den Europäern zuerst, Sanskrit u. übersetzte das Bhagvad Gita ins Englische, welches die Compagnie 1785 auf ihre Kosten drucken ließ; er schnitt u. goß bengalische u. persische Schriften, womit nun Grammatiken, Briefe u. dgl. gedruckt wurden. 1786 kehrte er nach Europa zurück, wohnte in Bath u. gab hier 1787 seine Übersetzung der Fabelsammlung Hitopadesa u. 1795 die Geschichte von Dushwanta u. Sakuntala aus dem Mahabharata heraus; 1800 wurde er Bibliothekar der Manuscriptensammlung, welche durch die Eroberung von Seringapatam in britische Hände gekommen war, u. st. 1835. Er gab noch heraus Sanskritgrammatik, 1806, dann Richardsons persisches u. arabisches Wörterbuch, 1806–10, u. wieder mit Jones 1629, auch einen Auszug daraus 1810, so wie die 6. Ausg. von W. Jones' Persischer Grammatik, 1804. 2) Will., englischer Alterthumsforscher; er schr.: The antiquities of magna Graecia, Lond. 1807, Fol.; Atheniensia, ebd. 1816, Fol.
