Aïn (arab.), Auge, Quelle; häufig in Ortsnamen des Orients, so 1) A. osch Schemes (d.i. Sonnenquelle), so v.w. Heliopolis; A. el Ginum (d.i. Auge der Götzen), Stadt im Königreich Fez; in der vormuhamedanischen Zeit feierten in dem dortigen Tempel Männer u. Weiber, nach Beendigung der Opfer, nächtliche Orgien; die aus diesen Umarmungen hervorgegangenen Kinder wurden zum Tempeldienst erzogen; Stadt u. Tempel wurden von den Muhamedanern zerstört. A. el Madi (A. el Madhi, A. Maadi), Stadt in der Provinz Tittery des afrikan. Reiches Algier; 3000 Ew.; erhielt im algier. Kriege besondere Wichtigkeit, indem Abdel-Kader es 1838 zweimal erfolglos belagerte. Dabei das Gebirg Amur (Dschebel A.), von 25,000 Arabern bewohnt. A. el Salah (richtiger Insalah), Stadt in einer sandigen, aber quellenreichen Gegend in der Oase Tuat (westliche Sahara), steinerne Häuser, meist von Marabuten bewohnt; Dattelpalmen, Getreide; 3000 Ew. A. el Titzar (d.i. Brunnen der Kaufleute), Schloß auf dem Tabor in Palästina, zum Schutze der Karawanen. 2) Stadt in Palästina zum Stamme Juda, dann zu dem Stamm Simeon, zuletzt den Leviten gehörend; 3) Quelle des Jordan bei Paneas.
