Burlington (spr. Borr'lingt'n), 1) Grafschaft im Staate New-Jersey, in den Vereinigten Staaten von NAmerika; 27 QM., große Fichtenwälder; von der Camden- u. Amboyeisenbahn durchschnitten; 1694 organisirt; 43,500 Ew.; Hauptstadt Mount Holly; 2) Stadt, Eingangshafen u. Gerichtssitz in der Grafschaft Chittenden, Staat Vermont, die bevölkertste Stadt im Staate, an der gleichnamigen Bai am östlichen Ufer des Champlainsee; mit einem Leuchtthurm; Sitz der Vermont Universität, gegründet 1791; Schifffahrt u. Handel; durch Eisenbahnen mit Boston, Whitehale, Ogdensburg u. Montreal in Canada verbunden. 1783 zuerst besiedelt; 6500 Ew.; 3) Stadt u. Eingangshafen in B. 1), an dem Delaware; durch die Camden- u. Amboyeisenbahn mit New-York u. Philadelphia verbunden; Sitz des Burlington College, gegründet 1846; 1667 zuerst besiedelt u. ursprünglich New-Beverley genannt; 4600 Ew.; 4) Handelsstadt u. Gerichtssitz in der Grafschaft Des Moines, Staat Iowa, am Mississippi; gegen 7000 Ew.
