Castagno

Castagno (spr. Kastanjo), Andrea del C., gen. dagli Impiccati, geb. 1406, wurde von einem florentinischen Edelmann zu Mahaccio in die Lehre gebracht, um das Zeichnen zu lernen. Seinen Beinamen erhielt er von einem Bilde an der Façade des Palastes des Podesta, auf welchem er die Mörder des Julian von Medici an den Beinen aufgehängt darstellte. Domenico Veneziana brachte damals die Kunst in Öl zu malen nach Florenz, u. als C. das Geheimniß derselben ihm abgelockt hatte, ermordete er ihn, um keinen Nebenbuhler zu haben; er st. 1480. Werke: im Berliner Museum eine Pietä in Tempera u. einen St. Hieronymus.
