Cesēna (spr. Tschesena), Stadt am Savio, in der päpstlichen Legation Forli; Bisthum, Theologisches Collegium, Bibliothek des Malatesta, Gesellschaft für Ackerbau, Künste u. Gewerbe; Seidenweberei, Schwefelraffinerie, Hanfbau; Hospital, erbaut von Papst Pius VII., der hier geboren ist u. dessen Bildsäule am Rathhause steht; 14,000 Ew. Dabei schöne Kirche der Sta. Mariadel Monte. – C. ist das Cäsena (s.d.) der Alten. Im Mittelalter gehörte es zu Bologna; im Anfang des 13. Jahrh. bemächtigte sich Maghinardo de Sesanana C-s; später kam es an die Malatesten, deren einer sie der Kirche u. Papst Alexander dem Cäsar Borgia schenkte, nach dessen Tode sie wieder an den Kirchenstaat kam Bei C. 30. März 1815 Sieg Murats über die Österreicher.
