Elpis (gr.), Hoffnung. Daher Elpistiker (Elpistische Philosophen), nach Plutarch Philosophen, welche das Hoffen für dasjenige erklärten, was das Leben noch am meisten erhalte, weil dasselbe ohne Hoffen unerträglich würde. Ob diese Elpistiker eine besondere Secte waren, od. Plutarch nur eine philosophische Ansicht ausdrücken wollte (nach Ein. der Cyniker, nach And. der Stoiker), ist ungewiß; Lessing hält sie für Pseudomanten, die Anderen ungegründete Hoffnung machen.
