Hawks

Hawks (spr. Hahks), Francis, geb. in Newbern in Nordcarolina, wurde Advocat u. prakticirte mit großem Erfolg, widmete sich später der Theologie, wurde 1829 Prediger in Philadelphia u. 1830 in New York; ging 1836 im Auftrage einer Generalconvention nach England, um Documente in Bezug der ersten Geschichte der Episkopalischen Kirche in Amerika tu sammeln; gründete dann die St. Thomas Hall in Flushing auf Long Island, wurde 1841 Bischof von Mississippi, resignirte bald darauf, ging 1844 als Rector der Christ Church nach New Orleans, kehrte aber später nach New York zurück; er schr.: Reports of Decisions in the Supreme Court of North-Carolina, 4 Bde.; A Digest of all the Cases Decided and Reported in North-Carolina (auch mehrere Bände unter dem Pseudotitel Uncle Philips Conversations); dann History of the Protestant Episcopal Church in Virginia and in Maryland; Contributions to the Ecclesiastical History of the United States, 1836–39, 2 Bde.; Constitution and Canons of the Episcopal Church; Egypt and its Monuments; Auricular Confession in the Protestant Episcopal Church, New York 1850 u. v. a.
