Possevīni

Possevīni, Antonio, geb. 1534 in Mantua, studirte in Rom, war dann eine Zeitlang Lehrer im Hause Ferdinands von Gonzaga, Statthalters von Mailand, u. trat 1559 in den Jesuitenorden; er machte seit 1562 Bekehrungsreisen zu den Waldensern u. nach Frankreich, wurde dann Rector des Collegiums in Avignon u. nachher in Lyon; 1577 ging er nach Schweden, um den König Johann III. zum Katholicismus zurückzuführen, doch vergebens; dann 1581 zu Iwan II. Wasiljewitsch nach Moskau, wo er den Frieden zwischen diesem u. Polen zu Stande brachte, aber die Hauptabsicht seiner Reise, die Bereinigung der Russischen mit der Römischen Kirche, nicht erreichte; 1586 kehrte er nach Italien zurück, lebte in Padua, Bologna u.
