Powers

Powers (spr. Pauers), Hiram, geb. 1805 zu Woodstock in Vermont, ging nach dem Tode seines Vaters nach Cincinnati u. wurde nach einander Aufwärter in einem Lesezimmer, Diener in einem Productengeschäft u. Gehülfe bei einem Uhrmacher; nachdem er das Modeliren gelernt hatte, trat er mit dem Western Museum in Cincinnati in Verbindung u. leitete etwa 7 Jahre das artistische Departement dieses Instituts; 1835 ging er nach Washington, wo er als Bildhauer arbeitete, u. 1837 zu seiner weiteren Ausbildung nach Florenz. Werke: Eva, The Greek Slave, The Fisher Boy. Berühmt sind seine Büsten von Jackson, Webster, Adams, Calhoun, Marshall etc.; eine seiner vorzüglichsten Phantasiebüsten ist Proserpina.
