Centumvĭri

Centumvĭri (lat.), eigentlich 100 Männer, in Rom ein Gericht, welches in Civilsachen (bes. in erbrechtlichen Streitigkeiten) Recht sprach. Den Vorsitz in ihrem Collegium (Centumvirāle judicĭum) führten früher die Quästoren, seit der Kaiserzeit die Decemvirn, u. während ihrer Sessionen war vor ihnen ein Spieß (Centumviralis hasta) aufgesteckt. Die Proceßform vor den C. war die alte Legis actio sacramento, welche diesem Gerichte auch dann noch blieb, als sie für die anderen Gerichte durch die Aebutia lex aufgehoben worden war. Die Zahl der C. war Anfangs 105, weil der Prätor aus jeder der 35 Tribus 3 zu diesem Gerichte wählte; sie vermehrte sich aber nach den Zeiten Augusts bis auf 180. Eingeführt wahrscheinlich 241 v.
