Vizeu (spr. Wise- u), 1) District im nördlichen Theile der portugiesischen Provinz Beira, ein malerisches, vortrefflich angebautes Berg- u. Hügelland mit 328,000 Ew.; 2) Hauptstadt darin; Sitz eines Bischofs, mit Kathedrale, 2 Pfarrkirchen, 3 Klöstern, großem Spital, Armenhaus, Theater, Wein-, Orangen-, Kastanienn- Flachsbau, großer Messe im September, Schweinezucht (berühmte Schinken); 9000 Ew. Hier Sieg des Viriathus über den römischen Consul D. Junius Brutus. V. wurde 1044 den Sarazenen von König Ferdinand abgenommen. Dabei Überreste von Wällen eines römischen Lagers (Cava do Viriato), sowie die verfallene Kirche S. Michael mit dem angeblichen Grab des letzten Gothenkönigs Roderich. In der Nähe der Badeort S. Pedrodo Sal im Thale des Vouga mit heißen Mineralquellen von 54° R.
