Cascarilla (Cascarillrinde, Schakarillrinde, Cort. Cascarillae), 1) Rinde von Croton Eluteria Sw., kommt in einige Zoll langen, 11–2 Linien dicken, leicht zerbrechlichen, mehr od. minder gerollten Stücken in den Handel, die außen runzlich weißgrau, auch dunkler, grünlich, gefärbt, rissig mit mehreren Arten Flechten, als Verrucaria nitida, planorbis, punctiformis Achar., Graphis scripta Achar., Graphis cascarillae Fée, Glyphis labyrinthica Ach. u.a.m. besetzt u. durch dieselben fleckig gezeichnet ist. Nach abgeriebener Oberhaut erscheint die Rinde heller od. dunkelbraun, auf dem Bruche oben matt harzglänzend. Der Geruch ist schwach aromatisch, entwickelt sich aber durch Erwärmen od. Anbrennen als ein starker, angenehmer, dem Ambra u. Moschus ähnlicher. Der Geschmack ist gewürzhaft, beißend, bitter. Sie enthält bittern, wenig adstringirenden Extractivstoff, Harze u. das Cascarillöl, dasselbe ist von gelber, oft bläulicher od. grünlicher Farbe, aromatischem Geruch u. hat ein specifisches Gewicht von 0,924; es besteht wahrscheinlich aus mehreren Ölen, die sich aber schwer von einander trennen lassen. Das Extract der Cascarillrinde ist officinell. Die C. wird in der Medicin als magenstärkendes Mittel u. gegen Diarrhöen angewendet. Bei länger fortgesetztem Gebrauche bringt sie aber Verstopfung hervor u. kann bei großen Gaben Entzündung u. Diarrhöe erregen. Man gibt sie in weinigem od. wässerigem Aufguß od. Absud, auch als Pulver, meist aber das Extract (zu 2–4 Gran pro dosi), welches am besten durch heißen Auszug mittelst der Real'schen Presse bereitet wird. Sonst hielt man auch ein destillirtes Wasser, Syrup, Tinctur (Aqua, Syrupus, Tinct. c.) vorräthig; 2) C. nova, s. Croton nitens, dem glänzenden Croton aus Westindien u. Südamerika ähnlich; 3) Cascarill-Chinarinde (Fieberrinde), von Mexico, von Croton Pseudo-China ist die Quina blanca od. Copalche Mexico's (Cortex Copalke s. Copalche); 4) Cascarillrinde (Fieberrinde), von Neu-Andalusien, dünne, blaßgelbe, bittere Rinde von Alsodeia Cuspa. A. P. Th. (Conoboria Cuspa Kunth.), eines hohen Baumes aus der Familie der Violarieen in Cumana, dort u. in Europa gegen Fieber gebraucht; 5) (C. de Indias. span), Chinarinde.
