Coulomb (spr. Kulong), Charles Augustin de C., geb. 1736 in Angouleme; war Offizier des königlichen Geniecorps u. ging nach Martinique; nach seiner Rückkehr nach Europa um 1776 in Rochefort angestellt, wurde er, da er gegen das Project der Minister war, in der Bretagne Kanäle zu bauen, kurze Zeit eingekerkert. Nochmals nach der Bretagne geschickt, erklärte er sich wieder dagegen. Als Obristlieutenant vom Geniecorps verabschiedet, zog er sich während der Revolution aufs Land zurück. Hier führten ihn Versuche über die Kraft, mit welcher gebogene Metalldrähte zurückspringen, auf große Entdeckungen über Magnetismus u. Elektricität. 1804 wurde er Mitglied des Nationalinstituts u. st. 1806 als Generalaufseher des öffentlichen Unterrichts. Er construirte die Coulombsche Drehwage s. Drehwage, u. schr.: Théorie des machines simples (Preisschrift).
