Dallas (spr. Dälläß), George Mifflin, geb. am 10. Juli 1792 in Philadelphia; studirte Rechtswissenschaft u. prakticirte als Advocat; 1813 begleitete er Albert Gallatin, den amerikanischen Bevollmächtigten, als Privatsecretär nach Rußland, kam 1814 nach den Vereinigten Staaten zurück u. assistirte seinen Vater, welcher damals Schatzsecretär war. 1817 wurde er zum stellvertretenden Generalanwalt für Philadelphia ernannt u. trat an die Spitze der demokratischen Partei in Pennsylvanien. 1825 wurde er Mayor von Philadelphia, 1829, nach dem Regierungsantritt General Jacksons, Districtsanwalt, 1831 stellvertretendes Mitglied im Senate für Pennsylvanien; 1837 wurde er Unter der Präsidentschaft Van Burens zum Gesandten nach Rußland ernannt u. 1844 zum Vicepräsidenten erwählt, welches Amt er bis zum März 1849 bekleidete. Er trat im März 1856 an Buchanans Stelle als Gesandter der Union in London, wo er die Unterhandlungen wegen der schwebenden Differenzen beider Staaten in Bezug auf die Ausweisung der englischen Consuln aus den Vereinigten Staaten u. aus Centralamerika glücklich zu Ende führte u. den betreffenden Act (Clarendon-Dallas'scher Vertrag) unterzeichnete.
