Grinnell-Land

Grinnell-Land, zwei Länder im nördlichen Polarmeere, benannt nach dem Nordamerikaner Grinnell, welcher sich durch Ausrüstung einer Expedition an der Aufsuchung Franklins (s.d.) betheiligte: 1) Insel am Nordende des Wellington-Kanals, etwa zwischen 76–77° nördl. Br. u. 70 bis 79° westl. Länge, durch die Arthur-Straße von Nord-Devon getrennt, von dem amerikanischen Capitän de Haven 1850 entdeckt u. dann 1851 von Capitän Penny gefunden u. Prinz Alberts-Land genannt, weil Penny von der Entdeckung durch Haven keine Kunde hatte; 1852–53 überwinterte Capitän Belcher auf der Insel; 2) das 1854 von Kane nördlich vom Smith-Sunde entdeckte Land, welches das dem Nordpol nächste Land bildet, welches bis jetzt entdeckt worden ist u. die nördliche Fortsetzung von Nord-Lincoln zu sein scheint.
