Hardwicke, 1) Philipp York, geb. 1690 in Dover, trat 1706 bei einem Anwalt in London als Clerc ein, wurde 1715 Attorney beim Gerichtshof von Middle Temple, kam 1719 ins Parlament, wurde bald darauf Sollicitor-General u. 1722 nach der Entdeckung einer Verschwörung zu Gunsten des Prätendenten, Attorney-General, 1733 Chief Justice of England u. 1737 Lordkanzler von Großbritannien, wurde zum Grafen ernannt u. schied 1756 aus dem Geheimen Rathe, lebte meist auf seinem Landsitze u. st. 1764. Lebensbeschreibung von J. Harris, Lond. 1847, 3 Bde. 2) Philipp York, Graf von H., geb. 1720, kam 1765 in den Geheimen Rath des Königs u. trat 1790 in den Privatstand zurück; er schr. u.a.: Athenian Letters (über den Peloponnesischen Krieg), Dubl. 1741, 4 Bde. (blos in 12 Abdrücken abgezogen), 2. Aufl. 1782 (von 100 Abdrücken), 3. Aufl. 1793, 2 Bde., u. Basel 1800, 3 Bde., deutsch von F. Jacobs, Lpz. 1799, 2 Bde.
