Ascension (spr. Ässentschen), 1) (Himmelfahrtsinsel), 1508 am Himmelfahrtstage von den Portugiesen entdecktes, 1816 von den Engländern besetztes nacktes Eiland im Atlantischen Ocean (Äthiopischen Meer) bald zu Amerika, bald zu Afrika gerechnet, 12 Meilen im Umfang, gebirgig. steinig, arm an Gewächsen, reich an Ziegen, Seevögeln, Fischen, Schildkröten (eine an König Wilhelm IV. von England geschenkte wog 900 Pfund); guter Hafen für Wallfischfänger u. Ostindienfahrer. Der höchste Punkt Green Mountain (Grüner Berg), ehemaliger Vulcan, 26011 Fuß. Fische, Seevögel, Turteltauben; nur auf der SOSeite etwas Pflanzenwuchs; seit der Besitznahme durch die Engländer sind Brunnen gegraben, Festungswerke (Fort Cockelburn) u. Niederlassungen (Georgetown) angelegt. 2) (Trinidad), Felseneiland an der Ostküste von Brasilien, zur Provinz Pernambuco gehörig, Besatzung; 3) (Bahia de la Ascension), Bai an der Ostküste des mexicanischen Staates Yucatan; 4) Fluß in Yucatan, mündet in die Bai gleiches Namens; 5) Fluß im mexicanischen Staate Sonora, mündet in den Californischen Meerbusen; 6) Kirchspiel im südöstlichen[798] Theil des nordamerikanischen Staates Louisiana, an beiden Seiten des Mississippistromes, 20 QM., Boden fruchtbar, Producte: Zucker u. Mais; Ew. gegen 11,000, wovon über 7000 Sklaven. Hauptstadt Donaldsonville am Mississippi, Ew. ungefähr 2000.
