Celsius, 1) Magnus, geb. 1621 in Helsingland, war Professor der Astronomie in Upsala u. st. 1679; er schr.: Specimen lexici runici, Kph. 1650, Fol.; 2) Olof, Sohn des Vor., geb. 1670, war Professor der Theologie zu Upsala u. st. das. 1756; er schr. u.a.: Hist. linguae et eruditionis Arabum, Ups. 1694; Hist. pyramidum Aegypt. ebd. 1725; Hierobotanicon s. de plantis sanctae scripturae dissertationes breves, ebd. 1745–47, Amst. 1748; 3) Anders, geb. 1701 in Upsala, wurde 1730 Professor der Astronomie das u. machte Reisen durch Deutschland, Italien u. Frankreich. Er stellte die (irrige) Ansicht auf, daß das Nordlicht vom Zodiakallicht herrühre, zeigte, daß der von Bianchini u. Maraldi in der Kirche Sta. Maria degli Angeli in Rom gezogene Meridian um 2 Minuten falsch sei, bestimmte das wahre Maß des altrömischen Fußes u. beschäftigte sich viel mit der Intensität des Lichts, maß mit Outhier einen Meridian in Lappland, beschäftigte[796] sich mit den Saturnmonden u. gab Veranlassung, daß die Sternwarte in Upsala errichtet wurde. Er st. 1744 u. schr.: De observationibus pro figura telluris determinanda, Ups. 1738. Nach ihm ist die Celsiussche Thermometerscale benannt, s.u. Thermometer. 4) Olosv. C., Sohn von C. 2), geb. 1761 in Upsala, wurde 1747 Professor der Geschichte das., 1756 nobilitirt u. 1777 Bischof in Lund; er st. 1794 in Stockholm. Er schr.: Svenska Nitet (ein satyrisch-moralisches, in Versen geschriebenes Wochenblatt), Stockh. u. Ups. 1738; Ingeborg (Tragödie), Stockh. 1737; Gustav Wasa (Epos), ebd. 1774; Bibliothecae Upsal. historia, Upsala 1745; Konung Gustaf I:s historia, Stockh. 1746–53, 2 Bde., 3. Aufl. 1792 (deutsch Kopenh. 1753, 2 Bde.); Kon ung Erik XIV:s historia, ebd. 1774, 2. Aufl. Lund 1795 (deutsch von Möller, Flensb. 1777); Svearikes kyrkohistoria, Stockh. 1767, 1. Th. (unvollendet). In Tidningar om de lärdas arbeten för 1742 gründete er die erste Literaturzeitung in Schweden.
