Leontĭos, 1) Patricier u. Feldherr des byzantinischen Kaisers Justinian II., wurde 695 n. Chr. dessen Nachfolger auf dem byzantinischen Throne u. von dem Usurpator Absimar 698 entthront u. 705 hingerichtet, s. Byzantinisches Reich. 2) L. Byzantinos Scholastikos, Advocat u. Presbyter in Constantinopel; er schr. 610 in griechischer Sprache über die Ketzersecten u. über das Concil in Chalkedon, herausgegeben von Tnrrianus. 3) L. der Jüngere, schrieb unter Constantinus Porphyrogenetes die Byzantinische Geschichte, von Leo dem Armenier bis Basilius dem Macedonier, herausgeg. in Combesis Historiae byzant. scriptores post. Theophanum, Par. 1695, S. 1 ff. 4) Pilatus, Schüler Barlaams, aus Thessalien, Mönch in Calabrien; wurde 1360 auf seiner Reise nach Avignon von Boccaccio in sein Haus aufgenommen u. der erste Lehrer der Griechischen Sprache in Westeuropa. L. wurde bei der Rückkehr aus Griechenland (wo er Handschriften geholt hatte) nach Italien bei einem Sturme auf dem Adriatischen Meere vom Blitz erschlagen. Auch Petrarca war sein Schüler.
